Biodata of Speakers

Chan Virak is currently a lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL), from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Education in TEFL in 2001. He has been lecturing there since then. In 2003 he gained a Diploma in Applied Linguistics from the Regional Language Center (RELC) in Singapore. He has been working as a teacher trainer at IFL for the last three years

Cheng Kimsan has been teaching English to technicians and engineering students since 1995. He gained his MA in TEFL in Sydney in 1999. His interests are developing authentic materials (BBC, Newspapers) for the classroom.

Choum Tival has been teaching students at the Cambodian Institute of Technology since 1995. He has attended the Thai TESOL Conference twice in Bangkok, Thailand. He also did a course on Design and Materials Development in Singapore.  He likes to work with provincial students and teachers to share his experience. 

David Howes is the Curriculum Development Manager with the USAID-funded Cambodian Basic Education project.  David previously worked with the MoEYS on developing upper secondary school policy, and has been a General Manager with the Department of Education and Training in Victoria, Australia. David currently lives in Phnom Penh with his wife and four children.

Jonathan Hull has taught English in Britain, Jordan, Oman, Hawaii and Micronesia. He has also been a university lecturer in Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan.  He is currently teaching at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Thailand.  He has a masters from the University of Hawaii and a doctorate from the University of Glasgow.  His professional interests include curriculum design and materials development as well as the use of introspective methodology in applied linguistics research.

Keuk Chan Narith currently works at the Institute of Foreign Languages, English Department, Royal University of Phnom Penh. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics from the Regional Language Centre (RELC), Singapore. He has six years experience teaching English as a Foreign Language and English for Specific Purposes. Currently his main responsibilities are training English teachers and providing academic counseling to trainees and students.

Koun Chamroeun is currently doing a Master Degree in Applied Linguistics in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand. He has Bachelor Degree in TEFL from the Institute of Foreign Languages at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. He has six years experience teaching English and has some experience as a trainer for the TEFL1 teacher training program at Spencer International, Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Bangkok, Thailand.

Meng Seng Heng is a Cambodian teacher trainer at the Regional Teacher Training Centre (RTTC). Trained by the Cambodian Secondary English Teaching (CAMSET) project, he has worked for the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) Education Services and for a range of both public and private sector organisations. He also received overseas training in the United Kingdom. Meng is a professional trainer with extensive experience in language and management training programs. He has designed and developed English language programs as well as training of trainers programs in English and Khmer languages, and has customised training programs for specific needs.

Pamela Hughes is an experienced British teacher and teacher trainer with an MA in Educational Management and Research. She co-wrote “Developing Successful Learning – a Partnership Approach” used by Cambridge University, and is a VSO volunteer currently employed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport as an Education Advisor in Kampot Province.

Prak Polla has been a National Secondary Inspector for ELT, MoEYS since 1996.  He has been involved in the training of teachers of English and secondary inspectors at the Faculty of Pedagogy, MoEYS. Currently, he is working with the UNICEF project on reforming the curriculum and policy for curriculum development for general education in Cambodia.

Psyche Kennett has spent the past fifteen years working on English Language teacher education and curriculum development projects, both in an educational and a managerial capacity, at national and sub national level.  She has worked in close cooperation with international donors, Ministries, education policy makers, teacher trainers, teachers, curriculum developers, textbook and test writers in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam to develop solutions that work at primary and secondary school level.  She is currently developing the English language and literacy Curriculum Standards for Qatar, in the Middle East, as part of a national overhaul for English, Maths, Science and Arabic.

So Phea is currently a teacher of English language to Engineering and Technician students at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. His main interest is to help students to develop their speaking skills.

Ul Run is presently teaching methodology to trainee English teachers at the Takeo Regional Teacher Training Centre (RTTC). He has a Certificate of Pedagogy in English-Khmer.  He has interpreted for the Asian Network for Free Elections in Mondolkiri, and has taught high school students for one year.  He is responsible for training English teachers from different provinces throughout Cambodia, and for conducting occasional workshops with VSO professionals for English In-Set.
