1st CamTESOLConference on English Language Teaching
12-13 March 2005
Phnom Penh

Preface to the Conference Program

Welcome to the 1st CamTESOL conference on English Language Teaching. This conference is the result of a collaborative effort of individuals from a wide range of educational institutions in Cambodia (see acknowledgements at back of program). It is the first in an annual CamTESOL conference series. This conference series will be conducted in English.

The aims of the CamTESOL conference series are to:

  • provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and dissemination of information on good practices within English Language Teaching

  • strengthen and broaden the network of English Language teachers and all those involved in the English Language Teaching (ELT) sector in Cambodia

  • increase the links between the ELT community in Cambodia and the international ELT community

  • showcase research in the field of ELT

The theme for the 2005 conference is “Practical Issues in Teaching”. This focus was a reflection of the desire of all conference committee members to keep the sessions practical and relevant for classroom teachers. The many streams chosen for the conference also focus on teacher issues and a majority of the presentations provide participants with tangible activities or information to apply in their own classrooms.

Early in the conference series we would like to publish an initial collection of CamTESOL papers. These papers would be selected from the 2004 workshop and the 2005 and 2006 conferences. We encourage you and your colleagues – both local and international – to submit an abstract for the 2006 conference. The deadline for abstract submission is 14 October 2005. More information will soon be available on the conference website: www.camtesol.org

This conference is being spearheaded by IDP Education Australia, but with the active participation of a broad range of institutions involved in ELT in Cambodia. It is anticipated that the conference series will come to reflect the active participation of all ELT institutions that are professionally orientated. We hope that in these first three years we will be able to establish a meaningful and sustainable conference series that will contribute effectively to the growth of English language education in Cambodia.

We hope that you enjoy the workshop.
