2nd CamTESOL Conference on English Language Teaching
“Improving the Practice”
Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 25-26 February 2006

Brief Overview

The 2nd CamTESOL conference was held at Pannasastra University of Cambodia.  The conference was all day on Saturday 25 February and the morning only of Sunday 26 February.

The conference was co-opened by the Senior Minister and Minister for Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), HE Dr Kol Pheng, and by the US Embassy Charge d’Affaires, Mr Mark Storella.

Innovations at this conference included:

  • Formalised dialogue between overseas mentors and CamTESOL committee members – immediately before and after the conference
  • An orientation program for teachers from the provinces on the preceding Friday afternoon
  • A Presenters’ Warm Up cocktail party on the preceding Friday evening
  • A Management Round-table for local and overseas managers

Registration for the conference totalled 722, of whom 671 registered for and attended on both days of the conference.  Of total registrations, 530 were Cambodians.  101 participants came from foreign countries specifically for the event.  There were 135 provincial teachers at the conference, 118 of whom were Government high school teachers sponsored by a range of donors, notably by the US State Department.

The conference had a total of 113 presentations including papers, workshops, demonstration lessons and poster sessions.  The two plenary speakers were Professor Denise Murray and Dr Betty Leaver.
